FA Cup memories 2017 start tonight – but do you have any from previous years to share?

Some new FA Cup memories on the way for West Ham fans tonight, as we take on Manchester City at the London Stadium. Let’s hope so.

But how about sharing your favourite FA Cup memories with us?

I’ll start with the FA cup run of 1975.

You might enjoy the latter stages of the competition in the video montage below.

You’ll love seeing the state of the pitches – especially the surface for the quarter-final with Arsenal at Highbury. And you’ll allow yourself a smile at the haircuts and fashion as we meet the team at their hotel.

On the day of the 4th round replay against Swindon Town I passed my driving test and in the evening I was then glued to the radio, kicking every ball in my bedroom as we cruised through. OK, I’ll admit cruise might not be the right word – it was very tense – but we can pop the rose-tinted specs on after this amount of time has elapsed.

I was then able to be at the fifth round win over QPR at Upton Park, saw the quarter-final drama first-hand at Highbury and then my Dad managed to get us semi-final replay tickets for a memorable night at Stamford Bridge against Ipswich, when it snowed. I somehow managed to get tickets for the final, too. Felt strange seeing my hero Bobby Moore lining up for the opposition that day.

Enjoy the clips below and then share your favourite memories.

Goatygav’s Bullets #6 – West Ham Squad Development

Goatygav’s bullets

With the January window just around the corner I was interested to hear your opinions of the current requirements of the squad – starting with a few observations: –

  • Journeymen or young prospects – Apart from any lingering grudges should Jermain Defoe join West Ham?
  • Some of the amounts being touted for a goalscorer, many of which have extremely meagre credentials, are ridiculous IMO. Personally I believe any striker coming to the club should, at least, have proven themselves with a better than 1 in 3 record in one of the top European leagues. Yes – spend the money but it HAS to be for real quality.
  • Are we really playing better football or is it simply an illusion created by recent wins?
  • The now fit Oxford and/or the exciting looking Martinez in the squad for the cup game vs City anyone?
  • Apart from up front do we need to strengthen anywhere else? Personally I don’t want to see another midfielder signed but would like to see more strength in depth at the back with at least one more central defender and, probably, one player in both the full back positions.
  • Nodtveit – has he earned enough credit to deserve a chance of a run?
  • Andy Carroll – do the team tend to pass the ball backwards before the goalkeeper punts it upfield when he’s in the side?
  • Happy that the players are now ‘putting it in’?
